Designing a future university around fieldwork, interdisciplinarity, and applied climate learning

Designing a future university around fieldwork, interdisciplinarity, and applied climate learning

Co-designed a concept for a new post-secondary institution focused on climate change through hands-on, interdisciplinary learning. Presented as a website, Future Earth Lab translated a future university idea into a more complete institutional prototype, including mission, admissions, academics, pathways, simulations, and public-facing content.

Context

Developed in LEDS 5000: Integrated Introduction to the Field, the project explored what a future university could look like if built around fieldwork, applied learning, and real-world engagement.

Problem

Future universities need stronger integration of fieldwork, interdisciplinarity, and applied learning.

Process

  • Translated broad ideas about future higher education into a full university prototype

  • Structured content across mission, academics, admissions, pathways, and simulations

  • Connected program design with student experience and public-facing presentation

Deliverables

A full university website prototype presented a future learning model

Reflection

This project reinforced that future learning design can happen at the institutional level through systems, pathways, and structures.
